What Do Those Stickers on Your Fruit And Veggies Really Mean?

Have you ever wondered what those numbered stickers on your produce really stand for?

They are either four or five digit numbers and can actually tell you a lot about what you are buying. Well if it is a four digit number ( 4230 ), it is concentionally grown. If it is a five digit number, beginning with an eight, ( 8164 ), it is genetically modified ( GM ) and if it is a nine, it is organically grown.

When you shop for produce, remember that some fruits and vegetables can contain more pesticides than others. Either the bugs couldn't get at it or may have died doing so.The Environmental Working Group puts out a List of the "Dirty Dozen" and the "Clean 15" every year.

The Dirty Dozen list includes:

1. Apples
2. Celery
3. Sweet bell peppers
4. Peaches
5. Strawberries
6. Nectarines
7. Grapes
8. Spinach
9. Lettuce
10. Cucumbers
11. Blueberries (domestic)
12. Potatoes

The Clean 15 below, are said to be the cleanest:

1. Onions
2. Sweet corn (*)
3. Pineapples
4. Avocados
5. Cabbage
6. Sweet peas
7. Asparagus
8. Mangoes
9. Eggplant
10. Kiwi
11. Cantaloupe
12. Sweet potatoes
13. Grapefruit
14. Watermelon
15. Mushrooms

(*) Although Sweet corn is also on the Clean 15 list, you should buy organic, only because corn is one of the most common Genetically Engineered crops.

Concerned about GMO's?

How can the wealthiest industrialized continent in the world, be the sickest? We are all the unwilling participants in a massive science experiment. When the US government ignored repeated warnings by its own scientists and allowed untested genetically modified ( GM ) foods into our environment and food supply, under pressure from large multinational agrifood giants such as Monsanto, it was a gamble of unprecedented proportions. The health of all living things and generations to come, were put at risk by an infant unproven technology.

North Americans get sick more often than Europeans ( who for the most part have banned GMO's ) or people from any other industrialized nation. Since the mid 1990's, when GMO's entered the scene, the number of North Americans suffering from at least three chronic illnesses , has nearly doubled. Life expectancy and infant mortality has increased. Illnesses once rare are now common with some approaching epidemic levels.

Autism is now said to affect over one in 88 children, compared to one in 25,000 in the mid 70's.

Type 2 diabetes increased in the US by 176% between 1980 and 2010.

Celiac disease is four times more common than 60 years ago.

Alzheimers disease is rising at alarming rates. It's estimated that 5.4 million North Americans ( one in 8 seniors ) now has Alzheimers and nearly half over age 85 have it. AD rates have doubled since 1980.

New Infectious Diseases are increasing annually.

Two types of Genetic Engineering

GE or GM crops come from crops that have been artificially altered by mixing and matching genes from other different organisms. They take genes from one species and force them into another species-even between species that have never mated in nature such as animals and plants.
There are two two types of GM or GE:

1. Herbicide tolerant crops plants engineered to withstand heavy herbicide spraying without sustaining damage.

2. Pesticied-producing crops plants engineered to produce their own pesticides, so if a bug eats one, its stomach explodes and it dies.

These processes are highly imprecise and full of unintended consequences. Viruses are typically used to genetically engineer the genes into a new species. Inserting the gene and then cloning it, can trigger massive collateral damage-sometimes leading to hundreds or thousands of genetically unintended and unforeseen mutations down the line. The end result is a gene sequence that doesn't exist anywhere else in nature. We have seen that plenty can and does go wrong. Your immune system for instance is a finely tuned system that has evolved over time to tell the difference between " normal " and " foreign " matter. When it is working properly, it can tell the difference between potential threats that are circulating in your body that may help you or harm you and get rid of the latter. When your immune system sees a gene sequence that is supposed to be "food" but has never seen it before, it attacks it as if it were a foreign invader. The food becomes a toxin, initiating an inflammatory response and chronic inflammation results, which is the underlying reason for most chronic desease. One key area where the inflammation occurs, is in your gut.. gut inflammation is a precursor to all sorts of chronic problems from heart desease to thyroid dysfunction, arthritis to the autoimmune diseases, you name it. Since the introduction of GE corn and soy into the North American diet, in 1996, many disorders related to gastrointestinal inflammation have been on the increase. So there you have it. Know what you are eating and if it isn't labeled non GMO, be WARY!
